Colombo Weather
Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and the largest city of the country. It is situated on Sri Lanka’s west coast of Bay of Bengal and south east of the Arabian Sea. Due to its prime location on the Far East Sea trade route Colombo is a very busy sea port. Colombo is a vibrant and busy city and has a perfect balance of historical and geographical beauty.
The weather and climate of Colombo is tropical. The winter monsoon extends from October to January and the summer monsoons from May to August. During summers the average temperature is about 31°C and approximately 22°C during the winter season. This type of climate makes Colombo an ideal destination to spend holidays. The northern and southern parts of the city are hilly. Towards the south east and eastern sides the land is marshy. Colombo has seasonal wind reversal of the Asiatic monsoon. The Asiatic monsoon switches directions from southeast to northeast depending on the months. The weather is fairly temperate throughout the year and dry from December to March. The humidity remains quite high throughout the year and the rainfall fluctuates depending on weather conditions. The average temperature during the months of March and April is around 31°C. it decreases during the monsoon seasons. From May to August Colombo receives the heaviest rain fall. The daily temperature range does not fluctuate much except in the dry winter months when it averages around 22°C. In June the maximum temperature is 30°C, minimum temperature is 26°C and rainfall is 190mm. In July the maximum temperature is 29°C, minimum temperature is 26°C and rainfall is 130mm. In August the maximum temperature is 29 °C, minimum temperature is 25°C and rainfall is 100mm. In September the maximum temperature is 29°C, minimum temperature is 25°C and rainfall is 180mm. In October the maximum temperature is 29°C, minimum temperature is 25°C and rainfall is 350mm. In November maximum temperature is 29°C, minimum temperature is 25°C and rainfall is 310mm. In December the maximum temperature is 30°C, minimum temperature is 25°C and rainfall is 150mm.
The 2004 Tsunami hit Colombo killing 35,322 people across Sri Lanka. The tsunami ravaged the coastal communities with waves up to 100 feet high in some areas. The best time to visit Colombo is during the winter season when the temperature is between 20°C and 27°C. This is the ideal time to visit and explore Sri Lanka. During the monsoon season the heavy downpours usually cause floods and the roads become dangerous.
